The closing night of Flyover Comedy Festival 2023 for me was filled with several of St. Louis’ best improv teams as well as some of Los Angeles’ premiere improv teams who made the trip to St. Louis. Unfortunately my weekend wristband didn’t get me into the headlining stand-up shows of the weekend featuring comedians Jeff Ross and Janelle James, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a killer final night to the festival at The Improv Shop.

One Four Fives

The night started with some music improv with the longstanding St. Louis music improv team ONE FOUR FIVES. The One four Fives perform long form music improv, taking a single suggestion and creating a fully improvised musical on the spot. This performance was centered around a monster truck rally. In this performance the One Four Fives cast consisted of: Anna Agniel Bushlack, Andy Sloey, Ashley Rube, Boo Kersting, Nathan Maul, and Ryan Myers, with Darrell Barber improvising on the piano as Music Director.

The Letdown & Touch Baseball

Next I headed over to the Side Stage of The Improv Shop for a show featuring two two-person improv teams. First up was THE LETDOWN which is a Brooklyn based improv team featuring John Randall and Mike Jest. Then it was my personal favorite St. Louis improv team TOUCH BASEBALL featuring Ashley Rube and Ryan Myers. If you’re new to improv in St. Louis, seeing a Touch Baseball show at The Improv Shop is a great introduction!

Pony & Convoy

The night ended with two premiere improv teams from the Los Angeles Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) theatre, PONY and CONVOY. St. Louis was blessed with two of LA’s best improv teams performing in Flyover Comedy Festival. Pony featured the performers: Martha Fearnley, Matt Apodaca, Kale Hills, and Kathy Yamamoto. Convoy featured: Alex Berg, Alex Fernie, and Todd Faser.

Overall it was a great weekend of comedy that invaded St. Louis. BIG shout out to the founders, producers, sponsors, performers, venues, staff, and volunteers who made Flyover Comedy Festival 2023 such a success in St. Louis. And even bigger thanks to the audience members who attended all the shows. Without you, we’re all just adults playing pretend alone in a room.

Special thanks to Adam Huber of SplyceHouse Productions for letting me borrow his Sony FE 1.8/85mm lens over the weekend to capture these amazing performances.
