Our third and final day climbing at Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas was spent entirely in The Black Corridor, mostly on the Upper Level. There are so many classic sport climbing routes in The Black Corridor we had a full day of amazing climbs. We even met another group from Ann Arbor, Michigan and together we all attempted to conquer the classic route Rebel Without A Pause 5.11a.

The Black Corridor - Upper Level

The Upper Level of The Black Corridor consists of 15 sport climbing routes (8 on the Left, 7 on the Right). Routes on the Left side range from 5.9 to 5.10d. Routes on the right are more difficult with the majority grading in the 5.11 range with one 5.9+ and a 5.7. But it’s all dominated by the classic sport climbing route Rebel Without A Pause 5.11a at the end of the corridor on the right.

Our warm-up climb was Lewd, Crude, and Misconstrued 5.9+ (90ft, 27m) on the right side. This a long very cool climb beginning in a dihedral, going under a boulder mid-way up, and topping at the top of the wall. The crux is definitely in the dihedral, but once you get past that it’s a very enjoyable climb!

Rebel Without A Pause 5.11a

Rebel Without A Pause 5.11a (50ft, 15m) is a classic sport climbing and possibly the best route in The Black Corridor. It’s a slightly over-hung route following huecos requiring solid footwork and some strong fingers because the pump is real. Between our group of 6 and a group from Ann Arbor of about 10 we basically had the Upper Level to ourselves. People from each group took turns trying to conquer Rebel, some on lead, some top roping. It was a great way to make new climbing friends. How did I do? Couldn’t get passed the crux haha, but still an awesome experience!

The most difficult climb on the Upper Level of The Black Corridor is Livin’ on Borrowed Time 5.11c (50ft, 15m). This straight vertical climb is nothing but crimps and slivers all the way up. Ryan Wittich lead this route, with a take or two, but still an impressive accomplishment. Even more impressive was watching Meg Velius send it on top rope. Such strong fingers.

Rock Climbing at Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas

My first rock climbing trip out west to Red Rock Canyon was such an amazing experience. Being in a place like the beautiful Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area was one of the reasons I started rock climbing. Such an honor to be with an amazing group of climbers. I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Here’s to many more!
